Share ThisHONOLULU - He has been called the Lakers’ “silent warrior,” even though Coach Phil Jackson says Ronny Turiaf is “an outspoken guy.”
But it’s that warrior mentality, that energy and effort and defensive intensity that had Jackson saying after practice Friday that Turiaf has positioned himself to have a bigger role.
“I plan on starting him,” Jackson said. “I really am seriously considering starting him. Those positions are so wide open. He’s a guy that can bring energy to the game, the kind of start we need to have with a physical front. He’s a guy that can block some shots.”

Lakers, including Kobe Bryant, head to Hawaii. They go into training camp with their star saying he is ‘a soldier’ who will leave it up to management to make changes. Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown and, to a lesser extent, Andrew Bynum, are injured.

Looks like Kobe is expected at Lakers training camp, however, his spokesperson remains silent on the issue which still raises the question. Will Kobe report to camp? Will he still demand a trade? Or will Kobe sit out the entire season if he isn’t traded?

Shawn Marion a Laker? I cringe at the thought of this (being a Laker fan), but it may happen according to this Eric Pincus article from Hoopshype:
Sep 26, 2007, 01:33
Should the Los Angeles Lakers seriously consider an offer from the Phoenix Suns to swap Lamar Odom for Shawn Marion?
At first glance an article in the Arizona Republic seemed innocuous. The author suggests the Lakers may be a possible destination . . . but it didn’t seem significant.
But according to several Suns sources, Marion seems to be unhappy that the team will not talk about a contract extension. The word is that the four-time All-Star, in his eighth year with the team, wants $60 million over three years. Marion, already the highest-paid Suns player, will make $16.4 million this season and $17.8 million for 2008-09. Trade rumors might not bother Marion much anymore, because there are indications that he would welcome a deal. The locker-room reviews on such an idea are mixed.
The two top trade possibilities involve Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who is even more disgruntled with his team, and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom and a teammate, possibly forward Brian Cook.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-08 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said.
Doctors found cartilage damage during an exploratory procedure, and team physician Dr. Don Roberts performed microfracture surgery to repair the damage.
“There are things about this that are positive for Greg,” Roberts said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers’ Web site. “First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery.”

Seven-footer Greg Oden will spend pretty much all of his first season in the NBA on the Trail Blazers’ bench.
The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. A full recovery likely will take six to 12 months, the team said. This could affect the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff seeding as well, as many “experts” expected Portland to battle with the Lakers and other teams for one of the west’s 8 playoff spots.

NBA training camps open in less than a month, but there is still one burning question left in this offseason: What will Kobe do?
Bryant still has not yet backed off his trade demand from the Lakers. During the recent FIBA Americas tournament (in which the 29-year-old star looked as lean and mean as ever, by the way), he artfully dodged all queries on the subject. While most assume he will show up in Hawaii with his L.A. teammates next month, nobody seems to know for certain.
